Alice in Chains & Them Crooked Vultures
Sunday, 15 November 2009
For those who know me, I'm a real grunge-head, which means I've been foaming at the mouth ever since Alice in Chains reformed to release their new album, "Black Gives Way to Blue." And yeah, this Chains reunion does not include the late, great, Layne Staley, AIC's former frontman who passed on after a drug overdose seven years ago. However, the band lives on, and I'm one of the believers whom feel Layne would have wanted the name of the band to be carried forth, and the music.
When Layne died, it was like a wake up call for the rest of the group. Any one of the AIC's original components could have festered away one April in their apartment, not to be found until weeks later. "Black Gives Way to Blue" tackles those lost years, and the rehab and the survival of the band.
Anyway, music talent alone, AIC is among my faves for sound. That dirty, dirty, guitar riffing God, Jerry Cantrell, has the same great harmony in both his voice and through his chords, and the band still sounds amazing live after all these years. It may be hard for some to get into new frontman, William DuVall, but he brings his own skills to the table. No one will replace Layne, but William fits in without too much of a noticeable disagreement. Check out the tunes however you may, and if you like them, support the band by buying their album. It's a great one for any rock enthusiast.
I also want to highlight a band called Them Crooked Vultures, a super band comprised of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) on drums and back-up vocals, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) on lead vocals and guitar, and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass, along with Alain Johannes (who played with Homme in QotSA) for additional guitar.
TCV's debut album is expected to release in a couple of days, and has most of the nuances of QotSA, all of the clever lyrics (how Homme is the title "Mind Eraser, No Chaser") and much of that guitar sound, plus some interesting textures and drum tracks from the rest of the band in Grohl and Jones. And did you know Homme is married to Brody Dalle, former front woman of punk band The Distillers, and later component of self-propelled Spinnerette? Lucky guy. I'm about to book tickets to see their future kids.

Well, I haven't had a real website homepage for maybe a couple of years now, and I finally decided to make one. I probably won't like it, will scrap it and put up some weird flash thing again in the future, but for now, here is the latest version of me on the web.
Turns out I am all about the Twitter right now, so I put my Twitter feed over to the right. Links on left aren't anywhere near finished, and I'll probably focus on "film" soon. Recently viewed Changeling, pretty creepy, but a disappointing ending in my opinon. Ticker above, well, I probably will only update it for Redskins and Wizards games, those are the only two sports I really follow. Aren't those GIFs I made cute? Hahaha. I'm a total GIF geek, and of course, in case you didn't know, I follow the Washington Wizards religiously for work and love basketball. Not a bad job :).
Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to drop me some comments about the site if you have my contact :). I'll have to insert it somewhere in the future, but between Twitter and everything else you can get a hold of me fairly easy.
